Honoring a Life That Taught Us How to Live

Lou Holtz wasn’t just a coach who won games. He was a man who understood people—what moves us, what scares us, what lifts us, and what we’re capable of when someone believes in us a little more than we believe in ourselves.

Holtz led six different programs to bowl games and brought Notre Dame back to national-championship glory in 1988. But the wins were never the point. His real legacy lives in the thousands of players, coaches, and everyday people who walked away from him with a clearer sense of who they wanted to become.

He taught with humor. He led with heart. And he lived by a simple philosophy that still holds up in any locker room, boardroom, or living room:

“Everybody needs four things in life: something to do, someone to love, something to hope for, and someone to believe in.”

Holtz didn’t just say those words—he embodied them.
He showed us that leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice. It’s about being the most consistent one.
He reminded us that attitude is a choice, effort is a choice, and how we treat people is always a choice.

And maybe that’s why his passing hits differently.
Because leaders like him don’t just leave memories—they leave mirrors.
They make us look at our own lives and ask: Am I living in a way that lifts others? Am I choosing the things that matter?

Holtz had dozens of memorable lines, but a few capture his spirit best:

• “It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.”
• “Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.”
• “I never learn anything talking. I only learn things when I ask questions.”

These weren’t punchlines. They were invitations—to grow, to reflect, to lead with intention.

A Call to Action Inspired by Coach Holtz

This week, take one small step that honors the way he lived.

Not a grand gesture. Not a life overhaul.
Just one intentional act that reflects the four things he believed every person needs.

Choose one:

• Do something you’ve been putting off.
• Tell someone you love them—and mean it.
• Name something you’re hoping for, and write it down.
• Believe in someone who needs a little encouragement today.

One step. One moment. One person.

Have a great week!
