A Tradition That Tees Up Connection

“We didn’t know we were making memories, we just thought we were having fun”

We often chase what’s measurable – time saved, money earned, goals achieved.
Every September, 16 men gather in Hayward, Wisconsin—not just to play golf, but to honor a tradition that began 22 years ago as a simple father-son weekend. What started with tee shots and shared meals has evolved into something far more meaningful: a living legacy of friendship, laughter, and emotional connection.

The group includes 9 high school friends who’ve remained close for decades, joined by dads and lake neighbors who’ve become part of the fabric. We stay at a lakeside home owned by a great friend—someone I went to college with and raised kids alongside. It’s more than a house; it’s a memory vault.

We split into two teams and compete in a Ryder Cup-style tournament. The winning team earns their names on the Dondo Cup trophy, but the real prize is the time spent together. Poker games, pool matches, and increasingly heartfelt conversations fill the weekend. As we age, the banter deepens into gratitude. The laughter echoes with legacy.

There’s a framed quote in the house that reads:
“We didn’t know we were making memories, We just thought we were having fun.”

It’s the heartbeat of the weekend. A reminder that joy, when shared intentionally, becomes something sacred.

This tradition is proof that investing time in the people who matter most is never wasted. It’s a celebration of connection, of showing up, and of choosing to stretch your dash with purpose.

So here’s to the Dondo Cup. To the power of tradition. And to the kind of friendships that remind us: the best trophies are the ones etched in memory.

If you’ve been meaning to reconnect with someone, plan that weekend, or start a tradition – consider this your nudge.
